Incoming Democratic chairman of the House Intelligence Committee doesn't know the basics either. Reyes stumbled when I asked him a simple question about al Qaeda at the end of a 40-minute interview in his office last week. Members of the Intelligence Committee, mind you, are paid $165,200 a year to know more than basic facts about our foes in the Middle East. [...]
Al Qaeda is what, I asked, Sunni or Shia?
“Al Qaeda, they have both,” Reyes said. “You’re talking about predominately?”
“Sure,” I said, not knowing what else to say.
“Predominantly — probably Shiite,” he ventured.
[...] And Hezbollah? I asked him. What are they?
“Hezbollah. Uh, Hezbollah...”
He laughed again, shifting in his seat.
“Why do you ask me these questions at five o’clock? Can I answer in Spanish? Do you speak Spanish?” At least he did slightly better than two of the Republicans on the Intelligence Committee, who didn't actually know that there was a difference between Sunnis and Shiites. Tags: idiocy, politics

Study says violence in Iraq has been underreported"The standard for recording attacks acts a filter to keep events out of reports and databases," the [Iraq Study Group] report said. "A murder of an Iraqi is not necessarily counted as an attack. If we cannot determine the source of a sectarian attack, that assault does not make it into the database." —Hey, Bob. —Hey. —Looks like another IED exploded in Baghdad and killed a bunch of people. —Yeah? Any idea who did it? —Nope. —I guess it doesn't count, then. —Chalk another one up to the Bomb Fairy. —Yeah. —One of these days we'll catch that motherfucker. —Yeah. Tags: awful, idiocy, iraq

As much as I like my iPods, I've pretty much always had difficulties using them with Windows. Now, however, it's turning into EXTREME PAIN. Ever since sometime last week, every time I start iTunes, it thinks it's never seen my 60GB iPod before. It asks me for its name, and does a full resync. Needless to say, this is extremely annoying. 90% of the time, it also doesn't notice the 40GB (non-video) iPod I have plugged in (via Firewire). I have to kick the iPod service and restart iTunes, and that doesn't even always work. And when it does, it also has amnesia about that iPod, and does the full resync thing with it as well. Windows itself has no trouble seeing either of the iPods; I can browse them just fine in Explorer. Have any of you other Windows-using iPod owners seen these kinds of problems? (Yeah, yeah, get a Mac, yadda yadda yadda. As much as I dislike Windows, I've never had problems with any other devices I've connected to it. Oh, and don't get me started on iTunes' startup time.)
