Late notice: I'm going to be playing on an outdoor stage at the Cannery in Del Monte Square in SF, near Fisherman's Wharf, tomorrow (Sunday October 1) from 11 am-2 pm. Looks like it will be a straightahead quartet gig, and will be free. If you feel like braving the tourist crowds, please stop by!

After a dry month, I suddenly seem to have gigs the next three weekends:

This Saturday (April 29) at Jupiter in Berkeley, from 8-11 pm. We'll have Chase Michaels (sax) and Chris Gamper (drums) playing with us, both of whom are amazing. Weather permitting, we'll be playing outdoors.

Next Saturday (May 6) at Albatross in Berkeley, from 9-12 pm. Not sure who we're playing with at this one, but it will be a saxophonist. Quaint pub with boardgames and darts.

Saturday May 13 at Caffe DiVino in Sausalito, from 7-10 pm. Also not sure who the sax will be on this date. This is more of a dinner place than the other two, although people sometimes drop in for a drink at the small bar.

It's much too late to actually bother announcing this--I forgot to do it earlier, and I'm sure everyone actually has parties and things to go to--but I'm playing at the New Year's Eve party at the Albatross Pub in Berkeley tonight, 10 pm-1 am. We have a great sax player, Bryan Girard, and we'll be playing the usual mix of standards and modern tunes. (And yes, we have a chart for "Auld Lang Syne".)

Here are some mp3s (around 11-12MB each) of the better tunes from my gig last week at Anna's. (Headphones recommended, as the piano was a little quiet.) I particularly like how Infant Eyes turned out--there was some nice interplay between me and the sax. Alone Together was also a little more interesting than usual.

(A couple of really enthusiastic drunk guys came in during Inner Urge, which is why there's all the clapping and hollering during that one. It was kind of cool in that it got the audience going, but it was also a little distracting and weird.)

It was a really fun gig, and I feel like I did some creative playing, but I'm really feeling my lack of technical chops, especially in double-time and uptempo playing. I need to figure out some kind of practice regimen...for the past couple of years I basically haven't been practicing at all outside of gigs.

This Thursday (11/3), I'm going to be playing at Anna's Jazz Island in Berkeley from 8-11 pm. In addition to my usual bassist, David Jeffrey, I'm playing with a great drummer I just met, Chris Gamper, and a young sax player named Chase Baird, who played in the Monterey Jazz Festival's high school all-star big band this year. It should be a fun gig--we're going to be playing some more challenging material in addition to the usual stuff.

Anna's is a club dedicated to jazz (with a nice grand piano), and it's pretty casual--you can just show up whenever and leave whenever; there's a $5 cover charge.

I have a gig tonight in San Francisco, at the Monte Carlo Bar & Grill, which is at 3rd St and Yosemite down in Bayview. No idea what it will be like--I haven't played with any of the musicians other than the drummer; sounds like it will be a quintet with a horn and guitar. We'll be playing from 7-10.
